Ignition Interlocks

If the ADLRO revokes your driving privileges, or if the District Court convicts you and revokes your driving privileges as part of the sentence it imposes, you will be subjected to an interlock requirement.  During the period of revocation you will not be permitted to drive on any of Hawaii's streets unless: (1) the vehicle you are driving is equipped with an ignition interlock; and (2) you have obtained an ignition interlock permit.

The current cost of installing an interlock is about $80.  The current cost of renting an interlock is about $80 per month.  The current charge to remove the interlock at the end of a rental period is about $45.

After you install the interlock, you contact the ADLRO to apply for an ignition interlock permit.  You must have had a valid driver's license that was not expired, suspended or revoked for any reason other that the current revocation.

Repeat intoxicated drivers can rent the interlock equipment.  However, the ADLRO will not issue a temporary registration for a repeat intoxicated driver's vehicle.  Since the ADLRO will require a repeat intoxicated driver to surrender the license plates and registrations for all vehicles owned wholly or partly by the repeat intoxicated driver before it would issue an ignition interlock permit, a repeat intoxicated driver will not be able to to get an ignition interlock permit for a car the repeat intoxicated driver owns.  One solution in this situation, is for the repeat intoxicated driver to get an interlock installed on a car registered in the name of another driver, and then to get an interlock permit which allows the repeat intoxicated driver to operate that designated vehicle.

No one wants an interlock in their vehicle.  They are expensive, embarrassing and annoying.  However, they offer an entirely legal way to continue to drive during a revocation period.
